Arkansas PRSA Diversity and Inclusion Committee Update Celebrating #PRDiversity

August is PRSA Diversity month and the perfect time to celebrate our Diversity and Inclusion committee initiatives.

Earlier this year our chapter took on the challenge of bringing diversity and inclusion to the forefront of our industry with the launch of the Diversity and Inclusion Committee.

This committee is committed to upholding the universal understanding that diversity is about not only about celebrating race, ethnic, religious, sexual orientation and gender differences, but also fully embracing those differences.

In honor of this commitment, our first action was to adopt the following mission statement:

The Diversity & Inclusion Committee of Arkansas PRSA strives to provide resources and industry growth opportunities to its members of diverse ethnic and religious backgrounds, those with sexual orientation and gender differences and people with disabilities, to ultimately create a more inclusive public relations profession.

Committee members meet each month, after the PRSA meeting, to discuss and strategize ways we can increase diversity in an industry we all love. Our goal is to have year-round activities and programs focused on diversity and inclusion in the field of PR.

In continuing this goal, committee members and the chapter’s leadership have planned some special events for August!

Moving forward, I challenge each of our members to not only take time to participate in our Diversity Month programs, but also pledge to keep diversity top of mind year-round.  PR Practitioners have the opportunity to lead the way in stimulating diversity in Arkansas’ workforce, and as storytellers, we should strive to tell stories that represent all.   Public Relations should be the industry that leads the way in increasing a diverse Arkansas workforce, so let’s move past emphasizing diversity and ethnicity during holidays or special observances.  If our members want to take the lead and be a driving force we should take every effort to ensure diversity is more than a checkmark on your content calendar.  Let’s do all we can to ensure August is not just a month to shine a light on this issue but the beginning.
